The Phase One Survey Results

  • 62% of the 29 children below 5 years of age were infected with  Malaria.
  • 30% of the total population was infected with Malaria.
    All four species of Malaria parasites are present in the project area.
  • The governments’ drug of choice for Malaria treatment, Chloroquine, proved to be ineffective in more than half of the children that were treated for P. falciparum Malaria.

The Primary objectives of the Malaria Survey

  • To develop a comprehensive Malaria control strategy for the coastal area of the Rua and Lamboya districts.
  • To develop a model for comprehensive Malaria control in the coastal regions of Sumba. This model would be available for the government and NGO’s to follow should they decide to do their own intervention program.

The Secondary Objectives

  • To reduce the number of Malaria cases by 80% in the project area. To prevent all deaths caused by Malaria.
  • To establish an effective emergency treatment plan for cerebral Malaria cases, which if left untreated can lead to permanent brain damage, or death.
  • To establish first rate clinical facilities for efficient Malaria diagnosis and treatment.
  • To introduce effective diagnosis for all of the 4 types of Malaria found in Sumba.
  • To introduce effective treatment for all of the 4 types of Malaria. 
  • To significantly reduce the number of infective mosquitoes bites received by the people living within the project areas.
