Our Milestones to 2004
  • November 2003:  Baseline studies were conducted, including parasitology and entomology surveys, and assessment of the existing local health services.

  • December 2003:  The development of a comprehensive two phase Malaria control strategy.

  • March 2004: Additional baseline parasitology/entomology surveys were finalized in all six of the Phase One villages.

  • April 2004:  The District Health Office assigned two nurses to the Sumba Foundation Clinic.

  • June 2004:  The initiation of the Malaria Intervention Program: Impregnated Mosquito Nets were distributed and the villagers were instructed in the proper use of the nets

  • August 2004: The recruitment of 3 additional nurses for parasitology work at the foundation clinic, these nurses then received intensive Malaria microscopy training. At the Sumba Foundation Clinic, Malaria treatment practices and all other medical practices, were reviewed and upgraded to professional western medical standards by Dr. Dave Griffith, a volunteer doctor from the USA.

  • October 2004: The completion of Phase One: Clinical surveys were completed in all Phase One villages, and all of the remaining malaria cases in the villages were identified and treated. Training of Village Helpers was continued so that they are now able to recognize infected villagers and to arrange for their transfer to the Sumba Foundation Clinic.

  • Nov/Dec 2004: Planning and preparation underway for the programs expansion to Phase Two. In preparation of this new phase all houses in the 49 villages will be precisely mapped by GPS monitors, and all villagers names and family data entered into our computers. The initiation of this phase is planned to start in February/March of 2005 with clinical surveys of all villagers and then the distribution of treated mosquito nets.
