Mosquito net distribution
346 impregnated mosquito nets have been distributed in the 6 villages included in Phase One.
The population now covered is 603 people living in six villages situated within a 3 square mile area.
All heads of households have been trained in the proper use the treated nets and have received a Malaria Certificate that is prominently placed on the outside wall of their house.
Follow up surveys show that 97% of all people are now sleeping under the nets.
Neighboring villages are requesting to be included in the Malaria Control Program.
Quality Malaria Diagnosis and treatment is now available at the Sumba Foundation Clinic.
The Sumba Foundation Clinic now has the best diagnostic facilities for Malaria in Eastern Indonesia and provides the most effective treatment available.
The clinic has 3 nurses specially trained in Malaria Diagnosis and treatment, and it is equipped with 2 Nikon microscopes plus all of the facilities needed for professional slide staining.
10 to 20 patients are tested and treated daily at the Sumba Foundation Clinic, and all village level mass survey patients are also diagnosed and treated by the clinic
The Malaria treatment policy has been changed to a combination therapy of Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine and Chloroquine to overcome the drug resistant parasites common to Sumba.
The first dose of Malaria drugs are now being taken under the supervision of the staff at the clinic to assure that all patients are taking the drugs correctly.
All patients return for follow up testing 7 days after receiving malaria treatment to verify that they are free of infection
