The Sumba Foundation started working on this school in 2002 as our pilot educational project. We began by providing school supplies to all of the children, and drilling a well to provide safe drinking water for the children of the school and for the villagers living nearby. As funds came in the following year we were able to undertake minor repairs of the floors and walls of the two classroom buildings and to build a block of toilets for the school. We were also able to provide tables and benches for the children. Later in 2003 additional donations made re-roofing the building and installing new windows and doors possible. Due to these improvements enrollment has increased from 180 students in 2002, to 285 in 2004. It is now operating at its maximum capacity, but still there are hundreds of children in the area who cannot receive an education because there is a shortage of classrooms. We have consulted with the teachers, and with the parents in the villages who desperately want their children to receive an education. A new block of classrooms is needed, it is the only solution. We have brought this problem to the attention of the government and our efforts have resulted in a construction of two classrooms at Hobawawi. This is an excellent solution to the problem of the increasing educational demand.
