Every podium finish began with someone believing these young athletes deserved the opportunity to compete.
From 31 May to 7 June 2026, five athletes from The Sumba Foundation Boxing Team travelled to Kupang to compete in the Open Tournament – Rector’s Cup, Universitas PGRI 1945 Kupang.
For some, it was their first opportunity to compete on a provincial stage. Weeks of training, early mornings and countless hours in the gym had all led to this moment.
The team was supported by Head Coach Mr. Marthen J. Bing, Assistant Coach Mr. Vency A. Benyamin from PERTINA (Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association), and Staff Representative Mr. Johanis, whose guidance and support helped prepare the athletes both inside and outside the ring.
By the end of the tournament, four of our five athletes had stepped onto the podium.
- 🥇 Melkianus M. Nunu — Gold Medal (Youth Boys, 57–60 kg)
- 🥈 Ferdinan Baiya Woda — Silver Medal (Youth Boys, 60–63.5 kg)
- 🥈 Yosbia Tamo Ama — Silver Medal (Elite Men, 71–75 kg)
- 🥉 Oktavianus B. Bora — Bronze Medal (Youth Boys, 51–54 kg)
While Dedianus M. Wawo didn’t finish on the podium this time, representing Sumba at this level is an achievement in itself, and every competition becomes part of the journey.
These results mark an exciting chapter for The Sumba Foundation Boxing Program.
Because this program has never been about producing champions alone.
It’s about giving young people somewhere to belong. Somewhere to learn discipline. Somewhere to discover what they’re capable of.
The medals are worth celebrating.
But it’s the confidence they bring home that lasts the longest.
They returned home with more than medals. They came home with confidence, pride, and a glimpse of what is possible.Â
