In Sumba, poverty, food insecurity, and poor education are the main reasons why so many women are malnourished and up to 70% of their children stunted in growth. The main purpose of this project is to decrease the number of stunted children by securing proper nutrition of expecting malnourished women through the last 6 months of their pregnancy and their first 6 months after delivery. The program educates women in understanding of nutrition and the importance of breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months of a baby’s life, as the project aims to reduce adverse effects of poor nutrition by providing weekly checkups and food for malnourished expecting mothers. The total amount of food provided totals more than 7 tons of: rice, beans, chicken and vegetables, and 18,190 eggs provided to the women.
