Yohanis arrived with sores on his left leg, explaining that his troubles dated back to 2007 when a fishing accident left him injured, requiring surgery. Despite the procedure, Yohanis continued his work as a fisherman while tending to the wound. Initially, it appeared as a small, flat lesion on his skin, but over time, it grew. The sore itched, caused pain, and felt as though it was biting him.
Given the severity of his condition, the clinic conducted a skin biopsy. The results revealed that Yohanis was suffering from Chromoblastomycosis, complicated by squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer that now required surgical intervention.
This diagnosis marked a significant turning point for Yohanis, but he wasnโt facing it alone. With care and coordination, the clinic arranged a comprehensive consultation and facilitated the involvement of a surgeon. After evaluating the extent of his condition, the surgeon recommended an above-knee amputation of Yohanis’ affected leg. With his and his companionโs consent, the surgery was successfully performed on September 13, 2024.
Four hours later, the operation was declared a resounding success!
Throughout his recovery at the hospital, Yohanis was never left to face the challenges on his own. Over the next three days, his strength returned, and the relief on his face was unmistakable – the sore that had tormented him for 17 long years was finally gone. On September 16, he was discharged and safely returned home.
Although this marked a major core memory, Yohanisโ journey wasnโt over. A follow-up examination was scheduled to assess his progress. During this visit, Dr. Eddy Zulfikar, our administrative doctor, arranged for Yohanis to begin limb physiotherapy.
At his first session, Yohanis received an axillary crutch, carefully adjusted to his proportions by our dedicated nurses. Slowly, he learned how to move with it, each step a symbol of newfound freedom.
Watching him reclaim his mobility and live without the pain of cancer was a profound moment – a testament to the end of a 17-year-long battle and the start of a new, hopeful chapter.
