Economic Needs

Why Economic?

We’re equipping farmers to feed their families better, as well as sell their produce to pay for necessities.

Having nutritious food available is important for improving the overall health of the community. So, the Sumba Foundation provides farmers with organic non-GMO seeds from America, teaches them organic farming methods, and helps them safeguard their harvest. We’re equipping farmers to feed their families better, as well as sell their produce to pay for necessities, such as school fees and clothing.

As we’ve expanded our farming project, our goal is to educate farmers on crop rotation, production methods, and year-round farming techniques to allow farming during the dry season. One portable water pump and a hand tractor give a group of farmers the ability to raise crops during the nine-month-long dry season. The water to irrigate their crops comes from Sumba Foundation wells.

In addition to education, we’ve also guaranteed farmers a market for selling their harvest. We buy directly from local farmers for the Sumba Foundation’s School Lunch Program and Infant Nutrition Program.
